Things You Should Know

Do I have to take my car to the shop my insurance company suggests?
You have the right to choose the shop of your choice to make repairs. You are not required to use a shop selected by a claims adjuster. However, you are required by your policy to allow your insurance company a reasonable amount of time to inspect the damages prior to repairing it.

Do I have to get multiple estimates on the damage of my vehicle?
By law you are only required to get one estimate.

What if my insurance company is being difficult about getting my vehicle fixed?
If an agreement cannot be reached between your insurance company and the repair shop, every insurance policy has an “Appraisal Clause” whereby an independent appraiser can be called in to help resolve the matter.

Should I go with the shop that has the lowest estimate?
Repair estimates will vary. A lower estimate may not include necessary things such as front or rear wheel alignments, re-aiming your headlamps, etc. It’s your car; make sure it’s repaired to your satisfaction.

Tips

  • Never drive a car that could be unsafe because of damages.
  • A car is one of your largest investments. Have it repaired properly.
  • Always maintain control where you vehicle is repaired. Make sure the repair shop of your choice has the proper equipment to repair your vehicle properly. Compromise just simply isn’t an option when it comes to your family’s safety. Nor compromising the value of your vehicle since it is often the second largest investment for you and your family.
  • Make sure the shop offers a lifetime guarantee.
  • Take the time to investigate the shop repairing your vehicle. You can tell a lot about a repair shop’s quality by the pride they take in a clean and orderly facility.
  • Check out the shop’s reputation and Better Business Bureau rating. Also check with your stat’s attorney general’s office or consumer division affairs to see if there are any unsolved complaints.
